Political declaration

On June 8 UN member states adopted the Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS:On the Fast-Track to Accelerate the fight against HIV and to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. The declaration called for urgent action to ensure that no one is left behind in the AIDS response.

Fast-track global goals are to

  • reduce new infections to fewer than 500,000 annually;
  • reduce AIDS-related deaths to fewer than 500,00 annually; and
  • eliminate HIV-related stugma and discrimination by 2020.

The decalaration has a strong focus on women, girls and adolescents and calls for tailored combination prevention for these groups.
